Lol, i just found this shit and it was kinda stupid and funny but it works. I wanted to restore the messenger 2009 scenes. Read it....
I accidentally deleted few of the scenes in Messenger 2009. I tried to reinstall the Messenger but it didn't solve my problem. So I googled around and I found the solution. Guess what?????
To restore the scene in Messenger 2009, you have to delete all the scenes except the default scene (because it can't be deleted). Then shutdown the messenger and sign in again. Yup, that should solve your problem! No kidding....!

Thank you! I was afraid this was a hoax, but it really worked. The scenes returned in a different order, but the one I so wanted to use (but accidentally deleted) came back just fine. Yay! :-)

hmm..wen u say delete all the scene,do u mean all?and which one is the default?i accidently deleted this cherry blossom scene and i'm so lost on how to get it back.help..
yes i mean all of them except the one that cannot be deleted. just delete all and you'll see there will be only 1 scene left and cannot be deleted...that's the default one.....

Oh, and if anyone is wondering, you can find the scenes inside the Windows Live Messenger folder in a file called scenes.mct which is essentially a zip container with its extension renamed :)
Feel free to break it open and have a look at the scene files.
You could even add your own files to it with an appropriate modification of content.xml (which shouldn't be any more difficult than a simple copy paste).
Although I do have to say, I don't see any point in doing so since it is way easier to add jpgs/pngs/bmps directly :P

help! not all the themes came back. but i checked the scenes.mct file, opened it with WinRAR, and all the original scenes are still there. i can't figure out what's wrong...is it the internet connection or my laptop??
did u delete all the scenes except the default one? all scenes that are bundled with the messenger will be there when u sign in again.
Guys im not sure whether this solution still works coz a new update of msn is out. If the solution still works, please share it here.

23 scenes are back in there now... but in a different order, but who cares bout that.
